Looking for York retail jobs? We have the inside scoop

Despite the fact that many people consider the retail sector, particularly front line retail jobs, to be the domain of middle aged women and students, the sector currently offers the best possible chance of employment for the majority of those out of work and looking for a way back into the workforce. We're going to take a look at some of the opportunities available for those of you searching for York retail jobs, as well as those of you who may not yet realise the opportunities that are available to you in this particular sector.

There are two main options available to those who are simply trying to get themselves back working as quickly as possible in the York area. The first is supermarket work. With Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Tesco and Marks & Spencer all boasting a heavy presence in the area, there are numerous positions available for those searching for work.

The most common positions available for these companies are entry level roles working as a cashier or stacking shelves and maintaining the cleanliness of the store. These positions won't earn you much more than minimum wage, usually between £5.93 and £6.20 per hour, but they do offer you a foot in the door at some of the biggest and most successful retail brands in the United Kingdom.

If you would like something a little different within retail, we recommend that you take a look at some of the local shopping centres, including York Designer Outlet Shopping Mall, Coppergate Shopping Centre and Clifton Moore Shopping Centre. With each of these shopping centres containing dozens of different stores, the number of part time and full time positions on offer can be quite high at any given time.

The bulk of these positions are rarely advertised online, and you'll need to make sure that you frequent the stores you have an interest in working in on a regular basis. It will also help to speak to the manager if possible, so that you can verbally convey your prior experience (where applicable) and inform them of your interest in a position should one become available. You will earn around the same as you will working in one of the supermarket chains for these positions, usually between £5.94 and £6.40 per hour.
