World Education Games

Promoted by UNICEF and sponsored by Samsung, World Education Games is the world’s largest online education event. Launched in 2007, it is an annual, completely free oline challenge aimed at students from 4 to 18. An exciting and engaging way to promote learning and education across the world, its key message is education for all and its fun approach to learning works, as the results have shown so far: pupils taking part to the games have drammatically improved their core skills.

How do the Games work?

When it was first launched in 2007, World Educational Games focussed only on mathematics. The huge success of that event led to the world MathsDay, celabrated from that same year. Five years down the line, it is split over three days, focussing on literacy, mathematics and science. Students involved in the games have shown an improvement of over 30% in speed and accuracy. This is probably because the questions of the games are designed to foster curiosity and excitement about learning, with a unique and fun approach. Any student and any school is invited to take part, all is needed is an internet connection. A single registration covers the three days of the event.

The World Education Games is powered by the three platforms Mathletics, Spellodrome and IntoScience, therefore if a school has subscribed to any of them, registration is automatic and the same usernames and passwords can be used to log in the dedicated online Games portal. The Games can be played from home or school, and everystudent can take part in all three events. Each student entering a challenge is matched with 3 other students of similar age and ability. The match is in real time, and students of the same level can come from any background and place on the planet. There are 3 levels of difficulty for each challenge, with the easier questions worth 1 point, and the harder application and reasoning questions worth 2 and 3 points. As students complete the challenge, their personal tally grows. However, only the first 50 challenges of each students will be taken into account, in order to give space and a chance to everybody.

When do the Games happen?

Now that we know how they work and how to get involved, all we need to know is: when are the next World Education Games happening?

Registration are at the beginning of each year, normally in February, while the Games take place in March. A closing cerimony, called the Global Award Presentations, will take place 2-3 weeks after the last event
