How to go about training to teach in further education

If you are looking to take the next step in your career and undergo training to teach in further education, then we are here to help, as we present a number of resources you can use to help you achieve your aim of a job in post second level education.

Unlike primary teaching and secondary teaching, there is no all encompassing qualification you can get to teach in further education. Generally, all you will need is a degree in your chosen speciality, and then a diploma in education, which will then qualify you to teach your chosen subject in further education. To give you an idea of the different qualifications and jobs that are out there, we recommend checking out the Teach FE site at teachfe.com.

Another fantastic site that will give you information on both jobs and the level of qualification you will need to get them is the CILT site at cilt.org.uk/training_to_teach.aspx. CILT specialise in language teaching in further education, so if you are fluent in a second language, then this could be the site for you to check out!

The UK Government have also put together a fantastically helpful site for this kind of teaching, and that site can be found at https://nextstep.direct.gov.uk. This site will direct you to all of the jobs on government sponsored further education sites, and also give you helpful links about the courses that you will need to undertake to qualify for these jobs.
