We examine what you can expect from a career in sales management

With so many of the United Kingdom's industries having a huge focus in sales these days, there are an ever increasing number of opportunities to be found for anyone interested in working in sales management. Today we're going to take a look at exactly what that work entails, and how you can get involved.

One of the main things that you need to remember about sales management is that you are going to be responsible for the training and performance of a wide number of different sales agents. For this reason, you're going to need to have a proven track record in sales yourself, so this isn't really a job for a newcomer to the sales industry.

It is usually expected that you will have at least ten years worth of previous sales experience before you will be considered for a position like sales management, although this may be quite flexible based on your previous track record.

Having a degree in a field such as business or the sciences could help you quite a bit, since it will prove to prospective employers that you have a strong analytical mind - making you an ideal candidate for the position.

As a sales manager, you will need to identify problems with your staff's sales techniques. Once you have done that, it will be up to you to come up with solutions, and issue the corrective training necessary to avoid a repeat of the problems you have noticed.

Usually, those working in a sales management position can expect to earn between £29,000 and £38,000 in their first few years. However as you grow into the role, it is not uncommon to see wages in excess of £60,000 per year.

Working in sales management is not an easy job. You're going to need to be able to work well under pressure, while also having excellent of communication skills, both written and verbal. On top of this, you're going to need to have a proven track record of working well in a team and being part of a high pressure, target based working environment.
