It is usually expected that you will have at least ten years worth of previous sales experience before you will be considered for a position like sales management, although this may be quite flexible based on your previous track record.

Having a degree in a field such as business or the sciences could help you quite a bit, since it will prove to prospective employers that you have a strong analytical mind - making you an ideal candidate for the position.

As a sales manager, you will need to identify problems with your staff's sales techniques. Once you have done that, it will be up to you to come up with solutions, and issue the corrective training necessary to avoid a repeat of the problems you have noticed.
