Free resources for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

One of the frustrating things about teaching English overseas is that most schools don't provide the resources for teaching TEFL that you need. Never fear though. There are so many places you can get free resources that you won't have to spend any money at all.

Free Worksheets and Lesson Plans - There are thousands of websites that provide free worksheets and lesson plans for anyone teaching TEFL anywhere in the world, so don't ever pay a website for them. Look at mes-english.com, esl-galaxy.com, and eslcafe.com (a huge website for TEFL and ESL teachers). You should find everything you need, for any age or ability level you're teaching.

Get Free Maps and Leaflets at Tourist Offices - No matter where you are in the world, all major cities and towns have tourist offices. Here, you'll find maps, leaflets, and booklets - tons of information you can use for teaching TEFL and most of it is free.

Use maps to teach English vocabulary for directions, use leaflets on tourist spots to teach grammar and vocabulary, or to assign writing projects. There are thousands of uses for the material, so be creative.

Free Restaurant Menus - Pick up menus from places like Starbucks, KFC, Burger King, or any restaurant or cafe that allows you to take a few copies home with you. These can be used as resources for teaching TEFL students about food, shopping, and money, or you can use them to have students create short role-plays and conversations.

Free Videos for TEFL Students - There are tons of free videos online that you can either use online in class or download and copy to a CD for use in your TEFL classroom.

The BBC's Learning English has some wonderfully funny videos to use to teach idioms (bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/language/theteacher) or look on Youtube.com for hundreds of free videos for EFL teachers.
