Tips for night jobs in Bristol

These days, we live in a 24 hour society. We want 24 hour help lines, 24 hour transport, 24 hour entertainment, and even 24 hour groceries. It's no surprise, then, that night jobs in Bristol are growing in popularity.

However, night jobs aren't easy. You'll be living in a whole different world to day workers. You'll have to adapt to unsocial hours and be able to sleep when the sun's up. Here are a few tips to help you make the transition from day working to night working:

  • Plan your week in advance. If you work regular shifts this is easy, but if you are rota-ed for rotating hours it can be more difficult. Pencil in seven hours sleep per day, and include time for eating, socialising and relaxing. This will help to reduce stress and will make it easier to maintain a balanced lifestyle.
  • Be flexible with your plans. If you're too exhausted for dinner with the family, take a rain check. Listen to your body clock and don't try to force it to adjust too rapidly.
  • Power naps can be a night worker's best friend. A twenty minute nap can provide the energy you need to make it through a long shift.
  • Don't let your job take over your life. All too often night workers have to sacrifice family life and their social life for their job. If you think this is happening to you, it's time to reconsider your priorities.
  • Take plenty of breaks and stay hydrated. Your employer should make provisions for you.
