As a manufacturing manager it will be your job to oversee the manufacturing engineers in your department and ensure that the correct steps are followed in order to plan, design, modify, optimise and otherwise monitor the manufacturing process. You could be involved in the manufacture of any number of products or goods, including food, drink, plastics, oil, pharmaceuticals and much more.

With so much variety in the type of products, you'll need to be exceptionally knowledgeable about the industry you're working in, while also being able to work well with others, have a great organisational ability, strong communication skills and be able to solve problems quickly and on the fly.

In order to start off as a manufacturing manager it is recommended that you have at least an honours degree in any engineering subject, including chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and manufacturing engineering. Other degrees that may help you are business, administration and business management. For many companies it will also be essential that you have at least ten years of experience working as a manufacturing engineer, or previous management experience in another industry.

Salary for manufacturing managers starts at around £34,000 per year, and can increase to anywhere as high as £65,000 with additional experience.
