Are you suitable for jobs as a leisure attendant?

Are you interested in jobs as a leisure attendant? Leisure attendants are employed in both public and private gyms, as well as in some schools, universities and hospitals. If you think that this job is right for you, run through our check list to make sure that you meet all the necessary criteria.

  • Working as a leisure attendant can often involve working with children and vulnerable adults. If required, you must pass a CRC (criminal record check) with an absolutely spotless record. The expense of the check will normally be met by the employer.
  • You should have a keen interest in and a passion for sport. Although leisure attendants don't normally give instructions or lessons, you should demonstrate that you are committed to the industry.
  • No formal qualifications are required for jobs as a leisure attendant. However, a third level qualification or NVQ in a relevant discipline is considered highly desirable.
  • You should be able to demonstrate excellent customer service skills. Although leisure centres aren't dealing with customer transactions in the traditional sense, they still rely on their customers for income. It's therefore vitally important that their customers are satisfied with the level of service provided.
  • You must have an excellent understanding of health and safety issues, or be willing to undergo full training in this area.
  • Previous experience in a leisure environment is not essential, but would set your application apart from the crowd. Experience in hospitality or retail is also looked on favourably, as many of the skills are transferable to leisure.
