Top job interview presentation tips

First impressions last. Your appearance will speak volumes about the kind of person you are. The effort you put into job interview presentation is an indication of your enthusiasm for the position. Not only do you need to dress to impress but you should dress appropriately. You want to look crisp, sharp, reliable and confident. Here are some job interview presentation tips to help...

  • First, ask yourself what is the dress code? If you're unsure about the appropriate attire, call the receptionist and ask. Otherwise, it's always safe to stay on the conservative side. Keep it smart and simple, overdressed is better than under-dressed. You want to look clean and sharp, not rugged and sloppy.
  • A solid colour on both men and women will be less distracting than a pattern, keeping focus on your answers. Remember, you're there to be interviewed and not to advertise your closet. Simplicity is the key. Men should stick with a classic suit, simple shirt, dark socks and leather shoes. Hair should be clean and neat. Women should play it safe with a skirt or trouser suit. Light and subtle make up is acceptable and can help to brighten a complexion. A minor point that is often neglected is nails. Men should keep theirs clean and trimmed, women should do the same although light nail varnish is also acceptable.
  • Don't overdo accessories. Distracting your employer with a ridiculous amount of bracelets, necklaces and earrings will become irritating for them, especially when they are trying to focus on your replies. If you have tattoos, it's best to hide those too.
  • Avoid putting on too much perfume or aftershave. An overbearing smell can distract the employer from focusing on you and what you have to say.
