How to find internships abroad for summer

Are you interested in internships abroad for summer 2011? Finding a placement can be tough even if you're looking in the UK, and it can be even more difficult if you want to intern abroad. Don't be disheartened, but do come up with a back up plan for your summer in case you don't secure your first choice or find a position overseas.

Here are some suggestions to help you find an internship abroad this summer:

  • Start planning early. Many of the best internships are already filled by Christmas - so it's a good idea to start applying once you start your course in September.
  • Don't blindly send out dozens of CVs - you'll stand a better chance of getting an internship if you research companies thoroughly, spend time working on your application, and target your cover letter specifically for each company.
  • Check out companies that have summer internship programmes. These are especially popular in the USA, and some of them are open to UK citizens and other international students.
  • However, remember that not all internships are advertised. You can turn up a great opportunity by sending a letter and your CV to a company asking about opportunities.
  • Use your contacts. If you know someone who lives overseas or has worked or interned overseas before, let them know that you are looking for a position and ask them to keep an ear out for vacancies.
  • Before you apply for any jobs overseas, make sure that you check out the visa requirements for the country that you want to intern in.
