We take a look at what you need for hairdressing jobs in Leicestershire

With the way you look to others as important now as it has ever been, it's no surprise that the beauty therapy industry is doing quite well despite the fact that we are in the midst of one of the worst recessions in living memory. Although some more extravagant treatments, like acupuncture, are finding themselves a little less popular than they used to be these days, the essential things like haircuts are still generating plenty of income for the beauty industry.

If you are interested in hairdressing jobs in Leicestershire but are unsure as to the kind of qualifications or formal training you need in order to be considered for the position, then you'll be glad to know that we've done all the leg work in order to find out for you.

While it's not essential to have any form of formal qualification in order to be a hairdresser, it is strongly recommended that anyone starting out these days has at least an NVQ or SVQ Hairdressing Level 2 qualification before they start looking for work. In some cases, you may be hired as a trainee during your formal training, or even without it at all, but these cases are becoming increasingly rare.

In your career as a hairdresser you'll need to start out the hard way, working minimum wage of £5.93 per hour for long and unsociable hours while you learn the trade. This should last for no longer than your first two or three years, and then you'll find yourself earning between £12,000 and £18,000 per year after you have gained your stripes. A particularly talented or skilful stylist can even expect to earn as much as £45,000 per year.
