How to gain geology work experience

Why is geology work experience important?

Geology is related to soil condition. This is where the foundation of a building is constructed, the most important structural aspect. Other structural (beams, columns, etc.) aspects affect parts of the building. But if the foundation fails, the whole building fails, regardless of its architectural (facade, finishing, etc.) aspects. A geologist earns from 45,000 to 70,000 pounds per year.

Foundation and soil types

You should familiarise yourself with the different types of soil and what kinds of foundation is suitable for which soil condition. Studying soil is more than what you see on the surface. After all, a foundation can be constructed deep into the ground, depending on the soil and building type. As you go deeper underground, you find different layers of soil. The level of water table comes into consideration too.

Soil testing

This is why you send soil to the soil laboratory for testing. Different types of soil present different problems to construction, especially if a highrise building is involved.

The officer at the lab tests the soil types and the results are recorded on soil test reports. As a soil tester, salary starts from 10,000 to 35,000 pounds per year. Most earn less than 20,000 pounds per year. These are then forwarded to the geologist or engineer for their further action.

Does a career in geology suit you?

You should be interested in material science, particularly soil. You should also be meticulous and analytical. The minimum entry level qualification is a four-year college degree in geology.
