Top ten frequently asked job interview questions

No two job interviews are the same, but the same questions may come up again and again. Here are ten of the most frequently asked job interview questions.

  1. Tell us about yourself. This is a deceptively comlex question. It isn't a friendly opener - it's a chance for you to sell youself to the panel.
  2. Why have you applied for this position? This is your opportunity to express your passion and enthusiasm for the industry, the company and the job.
  3. Talk us through your career history. It's a good idea to practice one to make sure that your answer flows well. Keep it relatively brief, focusing on the most impressive aspects of your career history and your greatest achievements.
  4. Why are you the best candidate for the job? This is a tricky one to get right - try to come across as confident without sounding arrogant.
  5. What do you know about the company? Relate the knowledge you've gained from your research to the job you are applying for.
  6. What is your greatest achievement? It's ok to give a personal response, but make sure to relate it to the requirements of this role.
  7. What are you greatest strengths? Give an insightful answer rather than rhyming off "buzz words" that you think the employer wants to hear.
  8. Do you have any weaknesses? Name one weakness that isn't relevant to the job.
  9. Where do you see yourself in five years' time? Make it clear that you want to progress within this industry.
  10. Do you have any questions for us? Ask questions relating to the scope of the role and the future of the company.

Remember that you have been invited to the interview because they think that you've got what it takes - so relax and you'll be fine!
