Find your perfect work experience

Work experience is one of the best aspects of educational courses. Without any work experience, no matter how good your qualification is, you might struggle to find the job you want. We offer some tips to help you find the right work experience for you.

  1. Decide what industry you would like to do your placement in. If you are on vocational course, this should be a fairly easy decision. If you are on a generalist course, your decision may be a little trickier. However, don't get stressed about the decision - just because you did a work experience placement in an industry doesn't mean that you have to pursue it as a career path.
  2. Make a list of companies that you would like to work for in the industry. This can be compiled quite easily using online searches.
  3. Check if the companies' websites have any information for work experience students. Many larger organisations have schemes that you can apply for. If there is no information, look for an email address or physical address to write to. Ideally this should be the HR department or the manager of the department that you would like to intern in. Try to find out the name of the person who deals with inquiries at this address - your request is much more likely to be acknowledged if it is sent to someone personally.
  4. Update your CV and write a good cover letter for each different company. This should also address the practical issues like when and how long you would like to intern for.
