The duties and responsibilities of a field sales job will vary in accordance with the product you are being asked to sell and the location you have been asked to target. The role primarily consists of cold calling, visiting residential properties to sell a product or service. You may also be required to follow up leads, generate revenue and acquire new customers, create new and inventive ways of generating sales and customers and giving feedback to management.

The working hours of a field sales job will vary depending on the sector that you are working in and the organisation. Often though sales organisations will require you to work evenings and weekends to generate sales. Homeworking is  an option with some field sales jobs whereby you could transmit orders, reports and sales information to head office.

There are a variety of qualities and skills that organisations look for when recruiting field sales staff. You need to have an ability and desire to sell, excellent communication skills, commercial awareness of latest products, confident and determined approach, resilience, a high degree of self motivation and the ability to work independently.

There are no minimum requirements in terms of qualifications to work in field sales. Increasingly, employers are looking for aptitude and ability in sales rather than academic qualifications.
