We give you the low down on Derbyshire careers in hairdressing

These days it seems like everyone wants to get involved in the beauty industry in some way. With the popularity of style magazines and TV programming through the roof, many young people have decided that they would like nothing better than to build themselves a career in hairdressing.

However there's a little bit more to it than simply deciding that you'd like to spend your time cutting hair. In order to find Derbyshire careers in hairdressing, you're first going to need to take an NVQ or SVQ Level 2 Hairdressing Course. On these courses you'll learn everything you need to know about cutting hair, as well as some of the tips and tricks to successfully working in the industry from a business point of view.

Once you have that you'll be able to start looking at entry level positions as a trainee. Trainee life is far from glamorous, and you can expect to be putting in long hours for minimum wage while spending very little time cutting hair. Fortunately, you'll be able to pick up some great advice from the more senior hairdressers in the salon, which will ultimately prove to be invaluable for your career.

Once you have qualified as a trainee, you'll be able to look towards building a full time career as a qualified hairdresser. You should be able to earn between £13,000 and £16,500 in your first year, increasing to as much as £19,000 after three to five years. More senior hairdressers can earn up to £25,000, while those who pursue a managerial position can make in excess of £30,000 per year.

We recommend getting in touch with the following Derbyshire hair salons to enquire about the availability of trainee positions;

  • Cut Above, 12 Firs Parade, Matlock
  • Toni & Guy, 8 Steeplegate
  • Tribes, 48-52 Knifesmithgate
  • Identity Hair & Beauty, 7 Cavendish Street
