Common interview questions for customer service jobs

If you are thinking about applying for customer service jobs, it's never too early to begin preparing for the big job interview. Here are some of the most frequently asked interview questions and some tips on how to answer them...

Tell us about yourself.

This is often the first question you'll be asked. Prepare a two or three minute answer that addresses your professional experience in the field of customer service and the reasons why you'd be ideal for this vacancy.

What do you think constitutes good customer service?

This question tests your understanding of the job. Aim to give an example to help illustrate your answer. A range of answers are acceptable, but make sure that you address the obvious aspects of customer service - helping, solving problems etc.

Describe a time when you dealt with an irate customer.

It's an unfortunate truth that all customer service staff will have to deal with an angry customer at some stage. In answering this question, you should describe the situation, the action that you took and the outcome. It goes without saying that you should only use examples that have a positive outcome!

Do you have any experience working with XXXX [computer system or phone system]?

These days, most customer service jobs are based in contact centres. In these cases, you need to be IT literate in order to log information and handle the customer query efficiently. If you don't have experience working with this particular system, make sure that you tell them you're a quick learner and a competent IT user.
