Common child care job interview questions

When it comes to any job interview, preparation is key. These common child care job interview questions will help you to prepare for an interview and give you an idea about what to expect...

Tell me about yourself.

This is a common opener in a child care job interview. When it comes to working with children, personality accounts for so much. You should give the interviewer an understanding of who you are as a person without straying too far from your professional life and your career history.

Why do you want this job?

There are two parts to this answer. The first is a general explanation of why you want to work with children. You should come across as passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about your chosen career. The second is to explain why this vacancy in particular appeals to you. You'll need to do some research on the company or school - and if it's a private child care job (like a nanny or au pair), highlight the reasons why you'll be suitable for this family in particular e.g. experience of working with children this age, a second language skill etc.

What safety precautions should a carer be aware of?

Safety is paramount in any job that involves caring for children. You can't bluff this answer - you'll need a solid understanding of health and safety and of risk assessment.

Do you have any questions for us?

Always prepare at least two questions to ask the interviewer. It shows that you're interested in the job and helps to develop rapport.
