An important part of being a part of a bar's staff is your personality. An ideal candidate is outgoing, pleasant, and has a helpful manner. You must have great communication skills and have the ability to carry heavy crates, beer barrels and boxes. An excellent memory is also a plus as you may need to take many orders from different tables and you will need to able to keep them straight. Also, you should have a good grasp with handling cash and making quick calculations in your head.

Some responsibilities that you will have are serving customers drinks, taking payments and operating the till, washing glasses, emptying ashtrays and clearing and cleaning the tables and bar at regular intervals. You usually do not need any qualifications when you start working, but depending on the pub or large bar, you may want to get your NVQ Level 2 in Food and Drink Service and Level 2 National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders.  You will also need to be at least 18 years of age to work in a bar. You can expect to earn between £11,000 to £14,000 per year, with the lower end being reserved for those with little to no experience.
