Ace that interview with these common job interview questions and answers

Here we run through a list of common job interview questions and answers to help you prepare for your next interview.

Tell me about yourself.

This is one of the most common questions for job interviews - and it's usually the first one asked. However, a shockingly large proportion of candidates fail to prepare for it, considering it an easy question that doesn't require much preparation. By contrast, this is one of the most important - and one of the most difficult - questions you are likely to be asked. And it's your chance to create a great first impression. You should prepare a two or three minute spiel summing up your professional achievements and aspirations.

Why are you the best candidate for this job?

Not all jobs want their employees to be cocky. Unless you're applying for a high pressured competitive industry like sales, it's not a good idea to make assumptions about other candidates. Claiming that you're better than other candidates that you don't know may also suggest that you're not a team player. Instead, deflect the question by saying that you don't know the other candidates, but you are confident that you could do an excellent job in this position. And give the reasons why.

What are your salary expectations?

This is another tricky one to answer. You don't want the employer to think that you're just there for the money, but at the same time you don't want to under-sell yourself. Give a well-researched range of salary that you would be happy with - it's less confrontational than a precise figure.
